Optimization of the characteristic angles of both front and rear McPherson suspensions on a circular track using multi-body numerical simulation

2009

The research reported in this paper aims to simulate the road-holding of a virtual vehicle using multi-body simulation to estimate both the contact forces between the tyre and ground and the roll motion when cornering. Furthermore, the effect of the characteristic angles on the variation in the forces of the tyre in contact with the ground is studied to determine optimal values for these angles. Emphasis is placed on an average-class vehicle, of which both the external dimensions and mass are chosen appropriately, with a McPherson suspension mounted on both the front and the rear. The characteristic values of the camber and toe-in angles, in both the front and the rear, are optimized for m…

Prophylaxis of lipopolysaccharide-induced shock by α-galactosylceramide

2008

AbstractThe NKT cell ligand α-galactosylceramide and its synthetic homologue KRN7000 stimulate rapid and copious secretion of IFN-γ and TNF-α release, both of which are key mediators of LPS-induced shock. We showed that KRN7000, injected before or within 2 h after LPS challenge, was able to prevent endotoxic shock. KRN7000 induced survival when the mice were injected 6, 9, or 12 days before the first injection of LPS, and this protective effect was associated with reduction upon subsequent challenge in the levels of IFN-γ, TNF-α, MCP-1, and an increase of IL-10. Further analysis showed that the animals treated with KRN7000 prior to LPS challenge had lower numbers of F4/80+, NKT, and NK cell…

The SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin improves the primary diabetic complications in ZDF rats

2017

Hyperglycemia associated with inflammation and oxidative stress is a major cause of vascular dysfunction and cardiovascular disease in diabetes. Recent data reports that a selective sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i), empagliflozin (Jardiance®), ameliorates glucotoxicity via excretion of excess glucose in urine (glucosuria) and significantly improves cardiovascular mortality in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The overarching hypothesis is that hyperglycemia and glucotoxicity are upstream of all other complications seen in diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of empagliflozin on glucotoxicity, β-cell function, inflammation, oxidative stress and endothel…

CD40 ligand and MCP-1 as predictors of cardiovascular events in diabetic patients with stroke.

2009

Aim: Up-regulation of soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L) and of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) has been found in diabetes and in patients with acute cerebral ischemia. We asked whether (i) the two molecules are similarly upregulated among non-lacunar and lacunar diabetic strokes and (ii) sCD40L and/or MCP-1 predict the risk of cardiovascular events in this setting. Methods: Ninety patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus presenting with an acute ischemic stroke (compared with 45 control subjects) were evaluated on admission and up to 36 months (median 24 months) after the event. Results: Diabetic patients with acute stroke had higher plasma CD40L and MCP-1 than controls (p<0.0001), wit…

Variable selection with unbiased estimation: the CDF penalty

2022

We propose a new SCAD-type penalty in general regression models. The new penalty can be considered a competitor of the LASSO, SCAD or MCP penalties, as it guarantees sparse variable selection, i.e., null regression coefficient estimates, while attenuating bias for the non-null estimates. In this work, the method is discussed, and some comparisons are presented.

Variable Selection with Quasi-Unbiased Estimation: the CDF Penalty

2022

We propose a new non-convex penalty in linear regression models. The new penalty function can be considered a competitor of the LASSO, SCAD or MCP penalties, as it guarantees sparse variable selection while reducing bias for the non-null estimates. We introduce the methodology and present some comparisons among different approaches.

Design of an Herbal Preparation Composed by a Combination of Ruscus aculeatus L. and Vitis vinifera L. Extracts, Magnolol and Diosmetin to Address Ch…

2023

Chronic venous disease (CVD) is an often underestimated inflammatory pathological condition that can have a serious impact on quality of life. Many therapies have been proposed to deal with CVD, but unfortunately the symptoms recur with increasing frequency and intensity as soon as treatments are stopped. Previous studies have shown that the common inflammatory transcription factor AP-1 (activator protein-1) and nuclear factor kappa-activated B-cell light chain enhancer (NF-kB) play key roles in the initiation and progression of this vascular dysfunction. The aim of this research was to develop a herbal product that acts simultaneously on different aspects of CVD-related inflammation. Based…

Adaptive smoothing spline using non-convex penalties

2022

We propose a new adaptive penalty for smoothing via penalized splines. The new form of adaptive penalization is based on penalizing the differences of the coefficients of adjacent bases, using non-convex penalties. This makes possible to estimate curves with varying amounts of smoothness. Comparisons with respect to some competitors are presented.
